Primary Responsibilities

The Warehouse Assistant Manager supports the Warehouse Manager with the efficient management of all warehouse functions including budget, warehouse condition, inventory quality, food safety requirements, equipment maintenance and training of warehouse staff.  Other responsibilities include proactively managing labour efficiency to ensure accurate inventory, selection and loading of product in the most cost-effective manner, manage and contingent plan inventory, quality standards and associate staffing and develops supervisory staff and provide leadership as well as serve as an operational resource expert.  As with all positions at Tree of Life Canada we expect that all actions will be consistent with Tree of Life Canada’s Mission, Vision, and Values

 

Essential Functions

 

1.    Safety:

  • Maintains safe and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Ensure all company sponsored safety programs are administered correctly according to best practice

2.     People & Training

  • Accomplishes warehouse operations human resource objectives by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation actions; enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Establish and implement operational policies and procedures including but not limited to production, receiving, routing, inventory, and transportation as it relates to the warehouse.
  • Responsible for the development and training Warehouse Supervisors and Hourly positions
  • Ensures warehouse associate training is occurring timely.
  • Assist with the recruitment of key warehouse staff according to business needs
  • Motivate, organize and encourage teamwork within the workforce to ensure set productivity targets are met. Train staff and monitor their performance and progress
  • Must maintain good attendance and maintain safe work practices.
  • Maintain safe work practices. Maintain safeguards of confidential company information.

 3.    Expense Management

  • Is familiar with and supports the attainment of warehouse operations financial objectives by forecasting requirements; assisting with the preparation of an annual budget; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Manage warehouse fleet of forklift equipment.
  • Monitors warehouse expenses and recommends more efficient methods to reduce the overall cost of operations.

 4.    Inventory Management

  • Responsible for accurate receipt and storage of product. Ensure product is properly entered into the inventory system and slotted efficiently.
  • Manage any 3PL warehousing support facilities

 

5.    Facility Management

  • Secures property by developing protection and access policies and procedures.
  • Manage cleaning and maintenance services (lighting & washrooms) for the office spaces located in the facilities, Coordinate with and satisfy office managers
  • Work with Landlords to maintain the property condition such that the landlord is satisfied.
  • Ensures warehouse is in compliance with all provincial and federal laws and auditor requirements.
  • Ensure all food safety compliance.

 

6.   Continual Improvement

  • Achieves warehouse operations operational objectives by contributing warehouse operations information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; completing audits; identifying trends.
  • Develops warehouse operations systems by determining product handling and storage requirements; developing, implementing, enforcing, and evaluating policies and procedures; developing processes for receiving product, equipment utilization, inventory management, and shipping.
  • Develops warehouse design by planning layout, product flow, and product handling systems, evaluating and recommending new equipment.
  • Develops warehouse operations system improvements by analyzing process workflow, manning and space requirements, and equipment layout, implementing changes.
  • Proactive communication to internal contacts regarding warehouse processes which impact customers and transportation.
  • Maximize warehouse space and ensure efficient product slotting.
  • Trouble shoots systems issues, which affect timely delivery and/or receiving of product.
  • Other duties and special projects as requested.
  • Should be comfortable working in a Fast-paced warehouse setting with exposure to multiple temperature zones, including:
    • Ambient (dry storage): 55°F–75°F (13°C–24°C)
    • Chilled (chocolate room): 55°F-57°F (13°C-14°C)
    • Refrigerated/cooler: 32°F–45°F (0°C–7°C)
    • Frozen: -10°F–0°F (-23°C–-18°C)
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting throughout the shift.
  • May require working in cold or freezer environments for extended periods.
  • Use of warehouse equipment such as scissor lifts, pallet jacks, forklifts, or reach trucks.
  • Role may involve early mornings, late evenings, weekends, or overtime depending on operational needs.
  • Requires adherence to PPE guidelines, including cold-weather gear in low-temperature zones.
  • Other duties and special project as required

 

 

Minimum Requirements, Qualifications, Additional Skills, Aptitude

  • High School Diploma required, and a minimum of five (5) years previous warehouse / logistics management experience.
  • Current Forklift & Related power equipment license and training certificate preferred .
  • Proficiency in RF (Radio Frequency) systems
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written) and fluent in English.
  • Proficiency in MS Office required. Computer skills in AS400 and SAP experience preferred
  • Excellent customer service oriented attitude with ability to get along with diverse personalities and communicate effectively with customers and all levels of Tree of Life associates. Must be tactful, mature and flexible with good reasoning abilities and sound judgement.
  • Must have strong management skills with able to efficiently organize a large team on various shifts
  • High energy level, comfortable and ability to establish creditability and be decisive but be able to recognize and support the organization’s preferences and priorities.

 

The base compensation range for this role is $68,000 CAD - $102,000 CAD. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
